The term sustainable is generally defined as “a use or
development that meets the needs of the present without
thereby compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their needs”. In fisheries management, this can be
interpreted as continuous harvesting of viable stocks.
It is our belief that the need for sustainable fishing policies and all supporting
regulatory measures are vital for the posterity of our industry, and we as a
significant processor of fish take our responsibilities to a sustainable future
extremely seriously. We formally mandate all of our suppliers clearly stating
that we will not deal with those who do not operate in a responsible manner
and which remain unable to demonstrate compliance with all relevant national
and international regulations.
To this end we fully support all efforts that have been made to bring forward
sensible and sustainable fishing practices, and our clear policy is firstly that:
- Five Star Fish will take all reasonable precautions to ensure that all its fish
purchases have not been caught, landed or farmed illegally.
In addition to this foundation principle:
- We are as key stakeholders actively supportive of the Seafish Responsible
Fishing Scheme, the Marine Stewardship Council fisheries certification
programme and our involvement in their Chain of Custody eco labelling scheme.
- We will endeavour also to encourage our customers to use the advice available
to them through the Marine Conservation Society, Seafish and other
organisations and wherever practical and subject to availability use fish from
MSC approved sources and the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme or from
our approved farmed assured supply chain.
- Additionally it is our policy that we will only initiate new product development
programmes that take into account the sustainability of the species based on the
best available scientific advice and we will only develop new products that originate
from legal and sustainable sources.
